- Brushing after every meal can get a little time consuming for most people, but there are different ways to clean your teeth without going for the full brush and paste experience. A simple rinse can eliminate food particles in the mouth to give you better breath. A pinch of salt in a glass of water could be enough to suffice. If you’ve eaten meals with high amounts of sugar or acid, you will certainly want to brush to protect your teeth, but again, a rinse is better than nothing.
- Brush when you wake up, and before you go to sleep. These are two of the easiest steps, but you would be surprised by the amount of people who skip them. Evening brushing may be more important than morning for your general dental health, but morning brushing also gives you fresh breath for the day. Both are recommended. Mid-day brushing is also important, as there’s typically a gap of 14 hours between bed time and rising. That’s a long time to have bacteria in your mouth, or food matter on your teeth.
- Start simple. When it comes to forming good habits, you want to streamline the process at first. It would be unrealistic to expect a patient to begin flossing religiously if that’s not a habit they’ve had. Floss once a day at first, usually during the evening, and then begin to incorporate that habit into other brushing sessions. The key is to set down the ground work, and then add on when you’re comfortable with the routine.
- Avoid excuses to break your routine. This is one of the primary killers of good dental habits. You may have exercised great dental care for a week, but even a day or two of missed dental hygiene can lead you to just skip your regular home cleaning. Just like exercise, dental care requires steady, regular care. Missing a day can lead back to old, bad habits.
